Eat Pray Sell

Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal's Jeffrey Trachtenberg published a story on the phenomenon of former NBCC finalist Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat Pray Love, which sold roughly 100,000 copies in hardback but then took off in paper. Not long ago, in August!, the book had just passed the million copy mark. Well don't turn your back. I had to run down sales figures this week for an end of the year story and it turns out "Eat Pray Love" is now closing in on the 4,000,000 copy in print mark -- the rate of sale is staggering. Last week the book sold almost 86,000 copies at Barnes & Noble alone -- numbers that boggle the mind.

And well deserved success it is, in my own opinion. This book made such a huge impact in my life I can't begin to measure it. Though it's not without flaws, it's funny and wise. The biggest lesson it teaches is probably Gilbert's illustration of how forgiving ourselves sets us free. It's a seemingly simple message with huge implications. I've been recommending this book since I read it the first time around. Now I'm re-reading it, and it's still as lovely as I thought it was the first time. Every now and then the right book gets big attention. This is one of those times.
The Kite Runner sold 4 million in the US, so Gilbert is up to par with that smash hit. Foreign sales?
